We recommend that every woman – regardless of her status in Israel – approach the Legal Aid Department of the Ministry of Justice in Israel. The Department has criteria for providing legal representation free of charge, except for a symbolic fee which, in many cases, is waived.
The Legal Aid Department will provide the woman with an advocate in the specific areas she needs representation in, such as alimony, National Insurance, custody, paternity, arrangement of status in Israel, etc., according to the woman’s personal circumstances, legal and other procedures. Please refer to the last section of this document for contact information of the relevant Legal Aid bodies.
In contrast to common belief, it is not always advisable to immediately approach a legal element for initial intervention. For example, we recommend that the woman herself approach the Ministry of Interior, accompanied by an assistance representative. If the response of the Ministry of Interior is negative, then it is recommended to turn to organizations working in the legal field or to the Legal Aid Department. We at Isha L’Isha are always happy to provide guidance on these matters.
